SHABBY CHIC MASON JAR DESK SET

Mason Jar Desk

One thing that I love to do is to make ordinary things look pretty. I mean, if we’re going to have things around, why not make them look nice?  So today’s idea shows you how to take regular old mason jars and turn them into an elegant, shabby chic desk set comprised of tack, pen and pencil holders. They’re sure to jazz up any workspace!

Something else I love is options.  I am slowly getting my office/craft room together and have decided to go with a pink, blue and white color theme.  The beauty of making things yourself is that YOU get to pick the colors that YOU love!  Pick three different colors, or do them all the same.  It’s completely up to you!

TO MAKE THIS DESK SET, YOU WILL NEED:

  • Mason Jars (number and size of your choice)
  • acrylic craft paint (colors of your choice)
  • paintbrush (I used the foam kind)
  • rubbing alcohol
  • sandpaper
  • clear sealer (the spray type)
  • labels of some sort (I found these beauties at Joann’s and also saw them at Hobby Lobby)

WHEN PAINTING YOUR JARS, THERE ARE TWO IMPORTANT STEPS THAT YOU SHOULD NOT OVERLOOK.

Clean your jars THOROUGHLY with rubbing alcohol before painting.  When they are new, they have some type of film on them that prevents the paint from sticking.

Secondly, let your jars dry overnight to let the paint cure.  Patience is key if you want the paint to stay adhered to your jars.  And who wants to spend time making them beautiful just to have to do it all over again?  It will be tough, but you can do it!

AND JUST LOOK HOW BEAUTIFULLY THEY TURN OUT!  AREN’T THEY WORTH THE WAIT?

mason jar pen holder

You can make your jars hold anything you want.  I happened to need one for pens, one for pencils and one to hold the tacks from this DIY custom bulletin board.

I found these silver labels near the mason jar supplies at Joann’s.  I saw them recently at Hobby Lobby as well.  They’re great because they are self-adhesive and it is easy to print labels in a font you like and insert them right through the front.  More options!  Yay!

And there you have it!  A shabby chic mason jar desk set that YOU made, in the colors YOU want!  Now don’t be shy, display them proudly!
